Attend Our Guided Walks!
Save Texas Streams' guided walks invite the greater Austin community to slow down and connect with the unique natural beauty of Barton Creek, Barton Springs, and the surrounding Hill Country. Led by naturalists and passionate volunteers, these walks offer participants the chance to learn about native plants, wildlife, geology, and the fragile ecosystems that make Central Texas so special.
More than just a hike, each walk is an opportunity to deepen one’s appreciation for the land and water Save Texas Streams works to protect. Whether exploring seasonal wildflowers, spotting wildlife, or discussing the history of conservation in the area, participants walk away inspired to care for and defend these irreplaceable natural treasures.
Guided Walk: Winter Birds on the Barton Creek Greenbelt
Saturday, January 31, 2026 | 8:30 - 9:30 am
2201 Lou Neff Road, Austin, TX 78746 (Barton Creek Greenbelt Mile Zero Archway)
Meet us at mile zero of the Barton Creek Greenbelt at 8:30 am, January 31st for a beginner-friendly bird walk. We will have a couple of binoculars to borrow, but you are encouraged to bring your own. Expect to hike for 1.5 miles and some of that might be in the dry creek bed. You'll learn about Austin's winter bird crew, including migrants from up north that are here seasonally and the year-round resident birds that call the Greenbelt home.
The walk will be led by Save Texas Streams' Board Vice President and Capital Area Master Naturalist, Andrew Harrod. Andrew graduated with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries, has led many bird walks at McKinney Falls State Park, and helps out with annual winter bird censuses that take place locally.
